With more than 4,000 grit removal system installations worldwide, Smith & Loveless continues to advance the science of grit removal with the patent-pending OPTIFLOW 270® Baffle System. Designed for PISTA® 270™ vortex grit chambers and other non-S&L competitive likenesses, the OPTIFLOW 270® Baffle System achieves previously unachieved grit removal efficiencies up to 95 percent of 150 microns during peak and low flows alike. The complete system comprises up to three different baffle elements, including the OPTIFLOW 270® LFB, B, and STF baffles.
Designed by the team that developed the PISTA® 270™, the OPTIFLOW 270® LFB baffle is installed on all units where the lowest flow rate is below 60 percent of the design rate. This inlet channel baffle maintains influent velocities to provide proper entry velocity into the main chamber vortex. The OPTIFLOW 270® B baffle fits inside the grit chamber at the exit, directing the flow toward the hopper for an additional pass along the flat-bottomed chamber floor for grit removal. This revolutionary baffle system reduces the weir effect at the outlet, improving the toroidal flow path within the PISTA® Grit Chamber and thus, retaining finer grit.
The key to PISTA® grit removal excellence is managing incoming velocity while properly conditioning the traveling grit. The unique PISTA® flat-floor grit chamber geometry induces true forced vortex operation within enabling efficient capture. So, for non-S&L 270-degree vortex grit chambers – typically with sloped floors – the OPTIFLOW 270® STF baffle can be applied to help convert the chamber for optimal grit removal performance.
