Delivering the Most Efficient and Longest-Lasting Packaged Wastewater Pump Stations

Smith & Loveless Inc.’s factory-built and tested above-ground wastewater pump stations and sewage lift stations deliver end-users and operators the benefits of robust construction, operator-safe maintenance, and single-source reliability. The result is efficient lift station performance, long service life and realized life-cycle cost savings—verified by decades of successful installations and leading warranty protection.

S&L packaged wastewater pump stations arrive pre-assembled with all equipment installed on a common base and a quick-access enclosure, allowing quick and easy installation on the wet well after basic suction pipe and electrical connections were completed. Our unique pump station solutions offer our engineering and end-user partners a strong alternative to conventional lift station approaches. Our proprietary EVERLAST™ Above-Ground Pump Stations offer the industry's most operator safe and easiest pump station to maintain -- everything is above the wet well and inspection of the complete pump station can be accomplished in mere seconds, eliminating all of the confined space hassles and costs associated with pulling sewage-coated submersible pumps from the wet well and accessing confined space valve vaults. Additionally, S&L innovated the original factory-built pump station concept with our Custom Series and CAPSULAR® Pump Stations with Safe-Stair™ access, designed for deeper bury and safe, continuous human occupancy. These pumping systems stand as cost-saving alternatives to concrete, built-in-place underground pump stations.

Powering S&L lift stations are proprietary STAR ONE™ Non-Clog Wastewater Pumps, each designed to meet the 10 States Standard for passing three-inch (3”) solids. These wastewater pumps— with their exclusive oversized stainless-steel pump shafts, oversized bearings, and bronze seal housings— deliver the industry’s longest service life and high efficiencies for solids-handling pumps. The pumps' larger shaft diameter provides increased rigidity, while its stainless-steel composition eliminates the possibility of rusting, one of the leading causes of eventual pump failure for solids handling wastewater pumps. The STAR ONE™ construction provides streamlined access for superior ease of maintenance of any wastewater pump: full access to the volute and suction elbow is possible by merely removing the cap screws and raising the entire rotating assembly in just a few minutes without spillage.

The results of a 12-year cost study conducted by one municipality revealed an overwhelmingly strong life-cycle cost advantage for S&L above ground pump stations compared to submersible lift stations, including across all sectors of labor time, cost, outside contractor cost, parts and maintenance. The study revealed that S&L pump stations provided total cost savings of nearly 56%, an average of more than $2,700 per pump station per year (nearly $400,000 saved by the city over a 12-year period)

To achieve the benefits of above-ground, operator-safe pumping, S&L lift stations employ robust, yet simple S&L Vacuum-Priming to prime its wastewater pumps. When wet well levels rise, the innovative WaveStart® Prime Sensing System achieves prime in 60 seconds under standard conditions, maintaining it indefinitely. Employing Multi-Variable Sensing™ with minimal connections, the system virtually eliminates O&M tasks associated with older priming systems, utilizes far less energy than self-priming pumps, and operates efficiently in applications with rags, strings, wipes, films, flushables and other debris.

Go Above the Wet Well! >

Consumer flushables… every wastewater operator’s nightmare. There’s not much worse than dragging a clogged submersible pump out of the wet well only to find it caked in wipes and other stringy material. And it’s a nightmare for those looking at budgets too. But for those who have installed packaged S&L pump stations with S&L Non-Clog Wastewater Pumps and X-PELLER™ mono-port impellers, those late-night calls to clear a clog have virtually stopped. Able to pass 3” (7.6 cm) solids, S&L Non-Clog Wastewater Pumps with X-PELLER™ provide the longest clog-free pump life for the lowest costs.

Stop Pump Clogs Before they Strike >

With all wastewater pump equipment, valves and controls immediately accessible at ground level, packaged S&L Lift Stations eliminate confined space entry and its associated requirements, including permitting, harnesses, gas monitoring equipment, and other OSHA and Class 1 Division 1 regulations. That means the time and personnel required to perform regular O&M at the pump station is greatly reduced. Routine tasks like pulling a pump to change a seal or impeller can be completed in minutes by a single operator, without the use of outside contractors or pricey pump maintenance centers

Stay Safe by Pumping Above the Wet Well -->

Over the course of the 12-year study referenced above, the city replaced 42 submersible pumps at a total cost of $282,000, or an average of $23,000 per year. S&L packaged lift stations, on the other hand, had zero wastewater pumps replaced over the course of the study. Due to frequent submersible pump failures, the city stocks a spare pump for each submersible station, while no spare pumps are kept on hand for the dependable S&L Non-Clog Wastewater Pumps.
