The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan. sought to understand the total cost for maintaining its 53 duplex pump stations, which comprised a mix of submersible pump stations and above ground wet well mounted pump stations. They analyzed 12-years of detailed records on all pump repair and maintenance work orders and parts costs for each of the stations. The study revealed significant differences in labor time and costs, outside contractor expense, parts costs and total pump replacements between the 21 submersible stations and the 32 wet well mounted pump stations.

Overall, the study showed a 56 percent differential in total O&M expenses, including a differential of nearly 30 labor hours per station per year, 42 pump replacements, and total expenses nearing $400,000 during the period.
