KCK Study - Above Grade Pumping vs. Submersibles

One municipality keeps detailed records on all repair and maintenance work orders and costs for its 53 pump stations, some submersible and some S&L Wet Well Mounted. A 12-year study of the data revealed nearly 56 percent lower operating expenses for the S&L stations compared to submersibles—a differential of nearly 30 labor hours and $2,750 per station per year!

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan. has kept detailed records of all repair and maintenance work orders for the 32 S&L Wet Well Mounted Pump Stations (WWMPS) and 21 submersible pump stations in its sewerage network for more than a decade. This includes all labor hours and costs, outside contractor expense, parts costs and total expenditures for these stations.

Total Cost Comparison Results

The results overwhelmingly favor the S&L Wet Well Mounted Pump Station approach with nearly 56% in total cost savings, an average of more than $2,700 per pump station per year (nearly $400,000 saved by the city over a 12-year period).

Preventative vs. Corrective Maintenance Hours

Contrary to popular belief, submersibles require a significant amount of preventative maintenance, as illustrated below.
